About NCDI.

Nyandoto Community Development Initiative – (NCDI) is a Community Based Organizations (CBO) initiated in the year 2003 with a major objective of enhancing the community social economic capacity by mobilizing available resources so as to achieve self-reliance and sustainable livelihood. It is a grand initiative of focused and concerned members of this very community as founded by Erick Nyabala. Read more about Erick and his vision for community. Click Here.

Currently, NCDI is composed of 20 members of whom 12 are females and 8 are males of ages 15 years old and above. The group is based in Koyolo Sub-Location of Gem - East Location in Rangwe Division, Homa Bay District.

Where is Nyandoto Community?

In Rangwe Division. The division has the locations of Gem, Kagan and Kochia, in Homa Bay District within Nyanza Province. The area has the leading number of cumulative reported AIDS cases (26880) in Kenya, comprising 28.9% of the country’s total taking from the latest research carried out by  NASCOP Kenya in May 2000.

Asumbi is about 20 km from Kisii Town. The local population is made up of both Kisii and Luo tribes. For a livelihood, the people practice small-scale farming, fishing and petty trade. Crops grown in this region are cassava, sorghum, maize, millet and groundnuts. In the recent past, the area has experienced very high HIV/AIDS related mortality rates to the extent that it’s impact on population, and economic growth is apparent

Why NCDI then?

The resultant far reaching consequences of HIV/AIDS on this community are extreme. Siting on the different levels of community life (the elderly, the young and the community in general), the impacts left as a result of HIV/AIDS is quite alarming. For the elderly they are particularly significant because:

  • Orphans are an added burden
  • Orpahns especially from the towns come with difference Lifestyle which are hard to cope with.
  • It comes with several Circumstantial Side effects especially due to constant worry from the children they can not help, they develop diseases that ”do not go away”.

The impacts of HIV/AIDS on the orphans are quite rampant e.g.

  • Increasing school dropouts.
  • Increased rates of child labor as younger siblings go off to look for jobs to fend for their brothers and sisters.
  • In cases where children are living on their own, relatives “ divide them up ”in order to cope with the burden of care and support, many a times the children leading their lives far apart and there is no sense of brotherhood and family love.
  • Declining rates of school performance as children attend schools, grappling with grief, lack of food, lack parental love and guidance.

In the general implication, the community wholesomely is hard-stricken with the pandemic and its resultant effects.
